23 Dec 2011All Subarus are top safety pick in USA
For a third successive year all Subaru models have earned the Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety in the United States.
Subaru is the only manufacturer operating in North America to have all its models – Impreza, Forester, Legacy, Outback and Tribeca gain the top accolade.
The award includes the all-new Impreza, which will be launched in New Zealand in April next year with top-level fuel efficiency** in the all-wheel drive passenger vehicle class.
On this win, Thomas Doll, executive vice president and COO of Subaru of America, Inc. said, “Our customers take their safety very seriously and so we are very pleased that IIHS has recognized us again with a TOP SAFETY PICK winner for all our qualifying models. To be able to include the redesigned 2012 Impreza to the list is an outstanding success and a tribute to the engineering that goes into our products. The IIHS reinforces to our customers that Subaru maintains the highest standards to produce vehicles that are fun-to-drive, durable, reliable as well as safe.”
IIHS provides consumers with vehicle safety information by rating the vehicle’s performance on four passenger protection tests as good, acceptable, marginal, or poor. To win TOP SAFETY PICK, a vehicle must have good ratings in all four tests of high-speed front and side crash tests, a rollover test, and evaluations of seat/head restraints for protection against neck injuries in rear impacts.
In addition, winners must be equipped with electronic stability control.
Internationally Subaru aims to offer “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind” through the Subaru experience and its brand statement “Confidence in Motion” as the foundation. “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind” is not possible without the crucial element of “safety”. Subaru continues to pursue all-around safety by continuing to advance its active, passive and pre-crash safety technologies.

BRZ sportscar unveiled at Tokyo Show
Subaru has revealed its sportscar, the BRZ, at the Tokyo Motor Show.
The Subaru BRZ is a classic rear-wheel drive sports car featuring a horizontally-opposed Boxer engine. It was developed as a joint-project between Subaru and Toyota Motor Corporation, to bring to the world a sports coupe with superior steering response and driving pleasure that everyone can experience.
No decision has been made yet whether the car will be launched in New Zealand, where all Subarus have been All Wheel Drive since 1996.
The new rear-wheel drive compact sports car features a horizontally-opposed Boxer engine, enabling an ultra-low center of gravity – producing what Subaru describes as a “pure handling delight.”
The trade mark Subaru Horizontally-Opposed Boxer engine has inherent qualities of a low centre of gravity, lightweight, and compactness. These attributes are maximised by placing this engine even lower and closer to the centre of the chassis to give a near ideal equal weight distribution front to rear of the 1220 kgs car.
The BRZ has a low driving position typical of a sports car. It has the low and wide body of a stylish coupe with overall height and width of 1,300 mm and 1,775 mm respectively. Yet, it allows for 2+2 seating and a luggage area with ample space. Not only is BRZ a sports car, but it can also be used for long journeys.
Subaru aimed for a sports car design that instinctively conveys its fun-to-drive character.
In addition, it was detailed to be instantly recognisable as a Subaru with a low bonnet design
and bulging front mudguards. The Subaru six-star badge, headlights and hexagon lower grille follow recent Subaru design language common across the Subaru range.
The low centre of gravity enhances BRZ’s sensuous beauty with its shapely fender flares.
As would be expected from a sports car, the front and rear overhangs were shortened to express BRZ’s liveliness. The car has a 2570 mm wheelbase and overall length of 4240 mm.
The interior features a small steering wheel to achieve sports car manoeuvrability. The tachometer with digitally-displayed speedometer is placed in the centre of the gauges so
the driver can instantly see information without diverting attention from the road.
Bespoke sports car seats were designed to hold the driver and passenger and feature
lowered sitting positions to match the ultra-low centre of gravity package.
Making full use of the design concept, the new-generation Boxer engine has a unique bore and stroke - 86mm x 86mm - from other two litre Subaru motors. It is made exclusively for the BRZ and is highly efficient with superior output and environmental friendliness. It has an exhilarating high revving nature of a naturally-aspirated sports engine.
Maximum power is 147 kWs with 205 Nm of torque.
The joint development with Toyota Motor Corporation has seen the use of Toyota’s direct injection and port injection technology D-4S on the cylinder heads. The engine as a whole has been made more compact by such means as adopting a shorter intake manifold and shallower oil pan.
The joy of sports car driving was attained through a transmission that focuses on shift feel and response. The 6-speed manual gearbox employs a short stroke shift lever. The lever was optimized in rigidity, shift quality and weight application in its pursuit of a superb shift feel.
A 6-speed automatic has sport mode for better shifting response and manual mode for optional shifting. Also, with the paddle shift and downshifting blipping control, this model can
respond faithfully to the driver’s inputs.
The lightweight yet highly-rigid body was developed exclusively to maximise the advantages of the ultra-low centre of gravity package. The body has a rigid and durable frame structure that also works in balance with the vehicle’s light weight. The rigidity is optimised for high driveability and appropriate durability is maintained for collision safety.
High tensile steel was used in the body for weight reduction. Effective use of this material in the upper structure of BRZ contributed to its low centre of gravity. An aluminium bonnet is used for lightness.
Excellent manoeuvrability and stability of the ultra-low centre of gravity package offers
direct and sharp response to steering and enhances the driver’s connection to the car.
The front suspension employs struts for light weight and high rigidity while a double
wishbone layout is adopted at the rear for better shock absorption. This mirrors the suspension components of the all new Impreza which will be launched in New Zealand in the second quarter of next year.
Seventeen inch alloy wheels are shod with 215/45R17 tyres. All BRZ models are equipped with electronic stability control to provide both driving pleasure and safety.

Mazdas New SKYACTIV-G 1.3 Engine Wins 2012 RJC Technology of the Year
Mazda Motor Corporation today announced that its newly developed ‘SKYACTIV-G 1.3’ engine has been named the 2012 Automotive Researchers’ and Journalists Conference of Japan (RJC) Technology of the Year. The SKYACTIV-G 1.3 engine is available in the new Mazda Demio (known in New Zealand as the Mazda2) in the Japanese market. RJC chairman, Hiroshi Fukunaga, announced the award after the final round of balloting.
Andrew Clearwater Managing Director, Mazda New Zealand said “Although the SKYACTIV-G 1.3 is not available in New Zealand, winning the prestigious RJC Technology award shows that the direction Mazda is taking with its SKYACTIV technology is gaining wide acceptance from motoring experts.
“We look forward to bringing the SKYACTIV technology to the New Zealand motoring public when we launch a number of new vehicles in the coming months.’
The breakthrough achieves a record high compression ratio* of 14.0:1 and exhibits outstanding efficiency, especially under high load at low rpm. In order to avoid knocking – an unavoidable issue with conventional high-compression engines – the SKYACTIV-G 1.3 features a number of new technologies, such as piston cavities that are specially designed to support ideal combustion, and multi-hole injectors that enable precise fuel injection control.
The Mazda Demio 13-SKYACTIV model grade combines the SKYACTIV-G 1.3 engine with Mazda’s unique idling stop system, i-stop, and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to deliver high fuel economy of 30.0km/L (under Japan’s 10-15 mode test cycle) or 25.0km/L (JC08 mode).

BT-50 GOES AS GREAT AS IT LOOKS
The all-new BT-50 is a genuine active lifestyle vehicle. With SUV-like power and handling to go wherever work, the family or hobbies demand. And better still, to go there in passenger-car-like comfort. Its dynamic performance realises a Zoom-Zoom driving experience that’s enjoyable, confidence-inspiring, and economical. Driveability, design and comfort: just three of new BT-50’s values.
Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director Mazda New Zealand, says, “The all-new BT-50 is particularly notable for combining passenger-car-like ride comfort with the powertrain durability and rough-road performance demanded in a pickup. We expect the New Zealand market to respond positively to this next-generation lifestyle vehicle.”
To deliver superior performance while achieving excellent fuel efficiency and low emissions, the all-new Mazda BT-50 has an entirely new, potent powertrain: a 3.2 litre 5-cylinder turbo diesel engine matched to 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions.
The MZ-CD 3.2 is Mazda’s first 5-cylinder engine offering large displacement in a compact, highly-efficient unit that achieves class-leading power and torque (147kW at 3,000 rpm/470Nm at 1,750-2,500rpm) together with superior fuel efficiency, while suppressing NVH for a quiet and comfortable ride.
The 3.2-litre power-plants feature a cast-iron cylinder block with ladder frame construction for greater rigidity, an aluminium cylinder head, maintenance-free hydraulic lash adjusters.
It has an advanced ultra-high pressure (1,800 bar) common-rail injector system with precision multi-stage piezo injectors, and a variable-nozzle turbocharger with a large capacity intercooler. The exhaust gas recirculation system has a high-efficiency cooler to further lower combustion temperature and suppress NOx emissions.
The new 6-speed manual transmission optimally positions the short-stroke shift lever for fast, precise gear shifting. Rigid laser-welded synchronizers handle the high torque while ensuring light, positive shift action.
In addition, the link-type shifter enables a shorter shift lever and shift stroke for a sportier, more passenger-car-like feel. An upshift indicator is included in the tachometer promotes fuel economy by helping the driver to avoid using unnecessarily high engine speeds.
The 6-speed automatic transmission features closely-spaced gear ratios with a wide spread for excellent torque from low engine speeds, along with low emissions and superior fuel efficiency. The transmission has a dedicated control unit for high-speed shift control while communicating with the engine control module to enable smooth, precise shifting and excellent response to the driver’s demands.
Advanced shift-control technologies have been adopted from Mazda passenger cars such as the Mazda6. These include Active Adaptive Shift (AAS) and Sequential Shift Control (SSC). AAS optimizes gearshift control in accordance with the driver’s style (learned over time), while SSC offers Normal and Performance modes plus a Manual mode that allows manual shifting.
The all-new BT-50 is engineered to give the comfort of a passenger car along with SUV-like handling. Front suspension is a double-wishbone layout with coil springs and the rear is a rigid axle with leaf springs, giving superior ride comfort regardless of load and road conditions.
Newly-adopted rack-and-pinion steering features a rigid mounting structure for a direct feel, while a quicker gear ratio and increased steering angle give near-class-topping manoeuvrability. It all adds up to responsive, linear, Zoom-Zoom handling.
The all-new BT-50 has even greater towing capacity of 3,350kg as a result of the new powertrain and the greater strength in the chassis rails to which the tow bar is attached.
Finally, the new BT-50’s styling isn’t just about striking looks: extensive simulation and testing resulted in an aerodynamically efficient shape that contributes to high-speed stability, fuel economy and reduced cabin noise.
Three body types are available: the five-seater Double Cab, the two-seater Regular Cab, and the 2+2 Freestyle Cab to suit individual family or business needs. These are all available with 3.2-litre diesels, mated to 6-speed manual transmissions or a 6-speed automatic transmission. All 4WD models feature shift-on-the-fly switching between 2WD and 4WD (high range), with the electronically controlled locking rear differential promoting off-road driveability.
Mazda commercialcare comes standard with every new BT-50 and includes: three years or 100,000km (whichever occurs first) Fixed Price Servicing, pay no more than $200 (incl. GST) per service. Scheduled service intervals are six monthly or every 10,000km (whichever occurs first). Three years or 150,000km (whichever occurs first) comprehensive Mazda Warranty cover. Three years unlimited kilometre Mazda On Call Roadside Assistance 24hrs, 365 days.
The all-new BT-50 is available now from Mazda dealerships nationwide from $35,295 (including GST plus on road costs).

Mazda3 Completes 100,000 km Test With Flying Colours
Mazda continues to triumph on the Auto Bild* endurance test. After Mazda6 and Mazda5, now the Mazda3 has passed the magazine’s 100,000 km endurance test with flying colours. Its score is further proof of the high product quality, reliability and durability of Mazda vehicles.
Mazda’s compact best-seller had only one, insignificant defect point after the long-term, two-year test drive – a defective plastic clip in the luggage compartment cover. This means Mazda3 achieved the top score and is now the third Mazda model ranked among the top three cars on Auto Bild’s tough endurance test – something no other carmaker has ever accomplished.
“Mazda is a prime address for anyone looking for a worry-free automobile,” Auto Bild editors wrote in their conclusion. They went on to add, “That legendary Japanese reliability is still alive and kicking here.” The latest endurance test results of the Mazda3 were published in the latest German-language edition of Auto Bild.
The test Mazda3 was a second-generation Mazda3 introduced in 2009. A facelift version, with updated technology and design, will roll into showrooms in New Zealand later this month.
The facelift Mazda3 will be the first model in New Zealand to offer the newly-developed, fuel saving SKYACTIV –G 2.0 direct-injection gasoline engine as part of its engine choices. Together with the all-new SKYACTIV-DRIVE, a six-speed automatic transmission that eliminates slippage and achieves a direct shift feel, similar to a manual transmission, fuel economy is impressively frugal at 6.2l/100km (combined).

New Zealander's Benefit From Mazda Foundation Grants
A school orchard, technology to help endangered birds, new sets of wheels for two young Hamilton girls and new resources for schools are among the grants handed out in the Mazda Foundation’s second funding round for 2011.
The Mazda Foundation has funded 13 grants in this round which saw over $26,000 distributed across the country.
One of the grant recipients to benefit from the latest funding round is Massey Primary School in Auckland. The school received a grant of $1,783 to plant an orchard which will provide fruit for the school students and the wider community.
The school wanted to plant an orchard so that it could offer healthier lunch options for students and teach them about resourcefulness and sustainability. The fruit will be available to all students and their whanau.
Tina Hodson, Massey Primary School’s Fundraiser, says, “Our aim is to include all the school children in this project, starting with the layout and planting of the trees.
“We want to educate the children about the value of fresh fruit by involving them in the planting, growing and harvesting process.”
The school is looking forward to the numerous benefits the orchard will bring, including increased immunity which will lower absentee rates; improved attention and achievement levels; and a reduction in littering within school grounds.
Andrew Clearwater, Chairman of the Mazda Foundation, says the Foundation is pleased to help so many deserving individuals, organisations and schools like Massey Primary.
“We feel very lucky to be in the position where we can help these admirable New Zealanders and support the projects in their communities. It is great to see the difference each grant makes,” says Clearwater.
The remaining grants went towards funding a burrow scope to help monitor the critically endangered Chatham Island Taiko; new trikes for two deserving young girls in Hamilton; a school holiday programme for the Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Society of Canterbury; a brochure for the Southland Wetland Heritage Trail; and new supplies for a handful of schools and kindergartens across the country.
The Mazda Foundation has now distributed over $1,100,000 to 277 recipients since its establishment in late 2005. These funds have gone towards new resources for schools; small community groups who do their bit to make a difference; individuals who face challenges on a daily basis; and charities that need a helping hand.

Mazda Bumpers A World First
Mazda Motor Corporation has become the world’s first automaker to successfully recycle scrapped bumpers from end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) into raw material for new vehicle bumpers.
Conventionally, bumpers from ELVs are processed into automobile shredder residue (ASR) and incinerated to recover heat energy (thermal recycling).
By enabling the ELV bumpers to be recycled into material for new vehicle bumpers, the new technology, inaugurated on August 21, 2011, improves the material recycling ratio (MRR) of Mazda vehicles and contributes to more effective use of resources.
Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director, Mazda New Zealand, says, “Mazda’s bumper-to-bumper recycling programme is part the company’s commitment to working towards a sustainable future.
“We continue to develop advanced recycling technologies and we look forward to delivering further improvements in the future as more design innovation and technological advancements become available.”
Many ELVs are over 10-years-old, so the composition of the bumpers’ polypropylene plastic and the adhesive properties of the paint vary considerably.
Before recycling, unwanted materials such as metal attachments must also be removed. As a result, processing ELV bumpers into new material has previously been technically and economically difficult.
To overcome this, in the 1990s Mazda began designing bumpers to be easily recyclable, and now the number of ELV bumpers that can be efficiently dismantled is increasing.
Currently, approximately 20 percent by weight of ELVs (parts made of plastics, rubber and other materials) is incinerated as ASR.
Bumpers comprise a large proportion of the plastic so collecting and recycling ELV bumpers is expected to make a significant contribution to reducing ASR and optimizing efficient use of resources.

Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director of Mazda New Zealand, says, “The design follows the striking new ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ theme and paired with the SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY, takes Mazda into a new generation. We believe the CX-5 will prove very popular with the New Zealand motoring public when it is launched here in 2012.”
The CX-5 is the first production model to showcase the ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ design theme, which was previewed with the Mazda SHINARI and Mazda MINAGI concept cars. Unique themes of KODO design include a prominent new front view with a bolder family face and dynamic styling that conveys a strong sense of vitality and agility.
Joining the CX-5 on Mazda’s stand at the Frankfurt show will be the facelifted Mazda3. It delivers lower CO2 emissions; more sporty and stable driving dynamics; updated interior and exterior design; and higher quality levels.
Officially titled the 64th Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA), the Frankfurt Motor Show will open to the press on September 13 and 14, and to the public from September 15 through 25, 2011.

Impreza and XV Concept highlight Subaru at International Motor Show in Melbourne
Subaru is highlighting its commitment to the Australasian market by showcasing four exciting examples of future designs and technologies at the Australian International Motor Show (AIMS) at Melbourne.
With its largest-ever Australian motor show presence, Subaru has underlined its focus on safety, style, performance, fun and recreation.
Melbourne is the first motor show worldwide to display the exciting XV Concept and new generation Impreza at one location, where both cars made their world wide right hand drive debut.
XV Concept points to a possible new generation sub-compact Sports Utility Vehicle. AIMS is also the worldwide debut for right-hand drive new generation Impreza, displayed in both sedan and hatch models.
Showcased too for the first time outside Japan is the innovative EyeSight™ safety system, to be launched in range-topping 2012 Legacy and Outback models.
And for motorsport and performance fans, there’s the sleek, turbocharged Legacy B4 GT300, which is a firm favourite among race enthusiasts in Japan.
Other Subaru technologies on display at AIMS include the latest generation horizontally opposed Boxer engine and Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).
Wallis Dumper, the Managing Director of Subaru of New Zealand said: “We’re delighted to have so many examples of great Subaru design and technology on display in Melbourne.
“Both XV Concept and our fourth generation Impreza have been warmly received overseas and we’re grateful that Fuji Heavy Industries has chosen Australia as the first destination where they can be seen in the one location.
“XV Concept could have huge potential. Firstly Outback, then Forester, proved Subaru’s ability as a pioneer in the SUV market. XV Concept could well offer similar success, with a different, bold approach to the sub-compact SUV arena.”
“Like Impreza, the EyeSight™ safety system will also be launched locally, with Australia and New Zealand the first overseas market outside Japan. Some aspects of this technology are currently only available in cars costing around four times what we anticipate.”
“It’s again going to highlight Subaru’s long-term safety commitment, which includes a five star rating for occupant safety for every car in our range from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).”
Subaru has yet to announce a launch date for Impreza or EyeSight equipped vehicles.
The bold, fashionable, fun-themed design of the XV Concept is a progression of Subaru’s long-running sports utility vehicle success story, highlighted by Forester and Outback.
Underpinned by a horizontally opposed Boxer engine and symmetrical All Wheel Drive, the XV Concept is a solid yet stylish package. It features Subaru’s new hexagonal grille design with winged motif and hawk-eye headlights. The black lower bumper and wheel arch protection, combined with the car’s metallic highlights, underline its crossover status.
Subaru’s next generation Impreza features a dynamic, stylish new look, major technical innovations, significant fuel efficiency gains and refined cabins featuring classy soft touch finishes and computerised information displays.
The all-new 2.0 litre horizontally opposed Boxer engine is mated to a Lineartronic™ transmission in addition to a refined six-speed manual.
New Impreza offers significantly improved cabin space – cleverly designed within the same exterior dimensions as the superseded car. It has a longer wheelbase, but shorter overhangs.

Mazda Foundation grants benefit Kiwis across the country
An Auckland musician and composer, a river safety education programme and a programme providing nourishing breakfasts to hungry school children were among those to benefit from the Mazda Foundation’s first funding round in 2011.
Ten grants were given out in the funding round which saw over $30,000 distributed across the country.
One recipient was Andrew McMillan, a talented musician who was left a tetraplegic following a BMX accident in 2004. He will be able to complete his Master of Music study thanks to his grant.
McMillan, 38, will use the $4,050 grant to purchase a laptop computer and software which will allow him to complete his study from home where he can access the round-the-clock support he requires.
“I look forward to creating new and original music exploring and collaborating with local themes. This grant will help me to achieve this as the technology I plan to purchase will allow me to control and manipulate sounds with the small amount of movement I have, and give me the opportunity to perform within these collaborations” says McMillan.
Andrew Clearwater, Chairman of the Mazda Foundation, says New Zealand community groups and projects are competing for funding now more than ever.
“We are living in extraordinary times and while it has been important to focus on supporting those affected by the recent disasters both at home and abroad, we cannot forget the community groups and individuals across New Zealand that still need our assistance,” says Clearwater.
Among the other recipients was funding for a raft for Peel Forest’s River Safety Education programme in South Canterbury, instruments for East Otago High School’s Music Department and two commercial dishwashers for Angelslight Breakfast Club in South Auckland to provide breakfasts for hungry school children.
The Mazda Foundation was established in 2005 to provide assistance to environmental, educational, skills development, cultural and community projects. It is funded through a contribution from the sales of every new Mazda in New Zealand, support from Mazda’s dealership network and dedicated fundraising activity by Mazda New Zealand.
There are three closing dates each year for applications to the Mazda Foundation. The next closing date is 30 June 2011. For more information or to download an application form, visit www.mazdafoundation.org.nz.

Subaru's next generation Impreza* has been unveiled in New York
Impreza Sensation in big apple
Subaru’s next generation Impreza* has been unveiled in New York with a dynamic, stylish new look, major technical innovations, fuel efficiency gains and refined cabins featuring classy soft touch finishes and computerised information displays.
The keenly anticipated Symmetrical All Wheel Drive Imprezas unveiled at the New York International Auto Show, boast fuel economy gains from the all-new 2.0 litre horizontally opposed Boxer engine. Initial figures quoted in the US reveal that the new Impreza will have an estimated highway fuel consumption of 36 MPG (6.53 litres/100 kms).
New Impreza offers significantly improved cabin space – cleverly designed within the same exterior dimensions as the superseded car. It has a longer wheelbase, but shorter overhangs.
For the first time, Impreza will offer a Lineartronic™ transmission in addition to a refined six-speed manual.
Among the many new Impreza highlights:
- Confident dynamic contemporary new design with powerful wheel arches, character lines, a larger glass area, the hexagon grille and hawk eye headlights.
- Sophisticated and spacious new interior, with wider door openings and lower sills. The windscreen has a steeper rake and a thinner A pillar. The instruments are mounted lower for a more spacious feel, while a multi function screen with trip computer is mounted in the centre of the dashboard and larger exterior mirrors provide better sight lines.
- The new quad cam two litre engine has active valve control on both the inlet and exhaust valves for more responsive performance and better fuel economy. This is aided by the Lineartronic continuously variable automatic transmission, a more compact version of that used in the Outback and Legacy. It has steering column paddle shifters to operate six “set” gears manually.
- The wheelbase is 23mm longer, but the sedan and hatch’s overall dimensions remain unchanged. Back seat passengers have 50 mm more leg room. Clever interior design has liberated more hip and shoulder room. Soft touch materials are used extensively inside and there are larger storage areas and door pockets. There is more luggage space with the boot/cargo area capable of carrying three gold bags
- Strengthened suspension provides enhanced stability, agility and ride.
- Safety continues to be a top priority for Subaru with the greater use of high tensile strength steel. The 2012 Impreza has a ring shaped reinforced body shell and uses larger air bags in the cabin. Vehicle Dynamics Control and ABS brakes with EBD and BA are standard.
Wallis Dumper, Managing Director, Subaru New Zealand, said: “New Impreza is the product of an exciting new design direction for Subaru that will be reflected in a whole family of future vehicles.
“It’s also a massive technological leap, with an incredibly lean petrol engine, new generation Lineartronic transmission and some other exciting technologies that we’ll reveal on New Zealand spec versions in due course.
“Inside, new Impreza takes Subaru interiors to a new level of refinement, with classy soft-touch plastics and a fantastic new computerised dashboard display.
“And as you’d expect with Subaru, there’s a full safety suite that we’re confident will maintain our five-star safety rating right across the range.”
“And while most entrants in the small car segment have the same ‘me too’ front wheel drive formula, our new Impreza stands out in a crowded market with All Wheel Drive on every model.
“The invisible advantages of All Wheel Drive is not only a great active safety feature, it also brings the drive ‘alive’. There’s been a huge amount of work on handling and ride, and I believe dynamically, it will be the best small car on the market.”
“The small car segment covers a broad spectrum of buyers – the changes I have outlined will make the new Impreza appeal to a greater number of buyers, without alienating our existing customers.
“We’ve also improved our infotainment to attract a younger audience. “Our Impreza has just become a whole lot more fun.”

Mazda CX-9 now available...offering plenty of room with Zoom Zoom
Mazda has injected some extra Zoom-Zoom into its model line-up with the introduction of the seven-seater CX-9 crossover powered by a 3.7L V6 engine providing passengers with the ultimate in style and comfort.
The first CX-9 was launched in 2006, and has become immensely popular with its combination of Mazda’s signature styling, responsive handling and dynamic performance. In a few short years, the vehicle has won over 20 global motoring awards and posted worldwide sales of more than 70,000 units.
Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director of Mazda New Zealand says the CX-9 has been in high demand from Kiwi motorists for some time.
“We’ve had steady enquiry for the CX-9 over the past few years and we’re pleased to be able to meet that demand as we enter the large SUV category in New Zealand. Mazda’s design team has worked hard to deliver an SUV which not only offers the power expected from a vehicle of its size but insightful packaging which is unmistakably Mazda,” says Clearwater.
The latest CX-9’s distinctive styling starts on the outside with Mazda’s signature family face – the bold five point grille with chrome surround. Sleek curves communicating Mazda’s Nagare design theme flow along the sides of the vehicle and are complemented by 20-inch alloy wheels with 245/50R20 tyres – the largest ever for a Mazda. The vehicle’s optimised shape means the SUV offers outstanding aerodynamic performance with a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.35. Other exterior design features include auto on/off halogen headlights and front fog lamps; rain-sensing wipers, power slide/tilt sunroof; rear spoiler and chrome finishing on the door handles.
Drivers will be able to select from six stunning exterior colours including Stormy Blue Mica, Copper Red Mica, Sparkling Black Mica, Crystal White Pearl, Aluminium Metallic and the new Dolphin Grey. Front and rear bumpers are matched to the body colour as are the newly designed door mirrors which feature side indicators, heater and reverse tilt-down functions for added safety when reversing.
Those on long road trips will appreciate the generous cabin space of 1,911 litres, ample leg room and seven full sized seats the CX-9 provides with its long wheel base of 2,875mm. At 5,099mm long and 1,936mm wide with a height of 1,728mm there is plenty of cabin space and easy access to the third row of seats thanks to the 60/40 split across the second row of passenger seats with slide and rake adjustment. The third row of seating is easy to pull up and collapse when required with a 50/50 split and flat fold function. There is also plenty of storage capability with ten cup holders, door map pockets, glasses compartment and a lockable and illuminated glove box to accommodate those with an active lifestyle. The CX-9 has a ground clearance of 147mm and a kerb weight of 2,080kg and excellent towing capacity of 2,000kg braked and 750kg unbraked.
Interior craftsmanship further adds to passenger comfort with black leather seat trim and the leather-trimmed gear shift and steering wheel which evokes a premium yet sporty look. The driver’s seat features an eight-way power-adjustable, three position memory while the front passenger seat has a four-way power adjustable memory. Both front seats feature a heating function.
Completing the interior is a double-opening centre console and dashboard well-equipped with three-zone climate control air conditioning with independent rear cabin control, Bluetooth functionality, blackout instrument lighting, cruise control and a trip computer to provide essential information on current and average fuel consumption, distance to empty and average speed. Other signature Mazda details include tilt and telescopic steering wheel adjustment, illuminated vanity mirrors, rain-sensing front wipers and power windows with driver and front passenger one-touch operation.
Foam-filler material application has been applied in 22 separate locations throughout the CX-9, more than in any previous Mazda. Foam-filler material along with enhanced suspension rigidity significantly reduces the level of road noise penetrating the cabin. The vehicle’s rigid structure also ensures greater handling and improved ride comfort.
A quiet cabin with less noise and vibration will allow passengers to listen to their favourite music over the high quality MP3/WMA-compatible 6-disc audio with premium 277W Bose® amplifier and 10 speakers, AUX connection for portable MP3 players and steering wheel mounted audio controls.
Performance and comfort doesn’t stop there with every CX-9 coming standard with mazdacare to ensure the vehicle continues to perform in optimum condition. mazdacare comprises a Mazda Genuine Factory Warranty and Mazda On Call Roadside Assistance for a 3 year, unlimited kilometre period and Genuine Mazda Servicing for 3 years/100,000 km (whichever occurs first).
The CX-9 Limited is available now from Mazda dealerships nationwide for only $59,990 plus on road costs. For more information, please visit www.mazda.co.nz.

Mazda MX-5 to Set Guinness World Record
With production of its 900,000th unit, the Mazda MX-5 will cement its place in the record books as the world’s favourite two-seater sports car.
Total production of Mazda’s MX-5 sports car reached 900,000 units on February 4, 2011– a significant milestone achieved 21 years and 10 months after production of the first-generation MX-5 commenced in April 1989.
The MX-5 was initially certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s “Best selling two-seat sports car” when production reached 531,890 units in May 2000 and has continued to top the list with the company now applying to Guinness World Records to have the record updated to 900,000 units.
“Since Mazda launched the original MX-5, it has undergone two complete product redesigns and a series of upgrades. Its enduring success is due to the strong support it enjoys from MX-5 fans both around the world and here in New Zealand where it has a cult following,” says Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director of Mazda New Zealand.
Local MX-5 enthusiasts will soon have the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a new Special Edition model of the iconic car, due for release in New Zealand later this month.
Mazda New Zealand is releasing a limited number of MX-5 Special Editions available exclusively in a stunning Dolphin Grey Mica exterior colour with tinted-grey leather interior trim with contrast stitching.
The vehicle’s unique styling also features chrome metre rings and air vent bezels, polished 17-inch alloy wheels with Bilstein suspension.
“Despite the additional packaging on this special edition, the vehicle is priced the same as the current MX-5 Manual-Transmission coupe so these special edition models will be snapped up quickly,” says Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director of Mazda New Zealand.
The Special Edition MX-5 will also come with a power retractable hard-top with rear glass window, a six-speed Manual Transmission and the same two-litre MZR engine as the current MX-5 coupe.
Every MX-5 special edition will come standard with mazdacare to ensure the vehicle continues to perform in optimum condition. mazdacare comprises a Mazda Genuine Factory Warranty and Mazda On Call Roadside Assistance for a 3 year, unlimited kilometre period and Genuine Mazda Servicing for 3 years/100,000 km (whichever occurs first).
The MX-5 is available for order from Mazda dealers nationwide from mid-February with a retail price of just $55,100 (plus on-road costs). All Special Edition vehicles will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. Email your enquiry to: mazda@palmfeilds.co.nz

New Mazda BT-50 raises the standard on safety
Mazda New Zealand today announced that Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) will be available on the All-New BT-50, a move which raises safety standards in the utility segment.
Dynamic Stability Control is already a standard feature on every Mazda passenger car and this announcement signifies a desire to offer utility owners similar levels of safety features to those enjoyed by owners of Mazda passenger cars.
Extensive testing has been carried out in Australia to ensure that the All-New BT-50’s DSC system is configured for the many different driving conditions that it will be subjected to. With the All-New BT-50 being capable of carrying a wide variety of loads and traversing road surfaces ranging from mud to bitumen, the DSC system has to be able to react in all circumstances.
Calibrating the DSC system to accommodate this wide range of operating conditions presents a challenge as Mazda New Zealand Managing Director, Andrew Clearwater explains.
“If you consider how the All-New BT-50 is likely to be used, it becomes clear just how many situations have to be taken into account to ensure that the Dynamic Stability Control system meets the needs of each and every driver and environment,” he said “Mazda engineers have spent months calibrating and fine tuning the Dynamic Stability Control system to ensure maximum safety and durability on a variety of operating conditions.”
When the All-New BT-50 is launched, it will be the first time that the potentially life- saving technology has been made available to Mazda utility owners.
Mr Clearwater is positive that the addition of Dynamic Stability Control to the All-New Mazda BT-50 will be well received by New Zealand new car buyers.
“It’s becomingly increasingly clear that utilities like the BT-50 are being used for such a diverse range of purposes. No longer are they seen as purely work vehicles but are now being used for the weekend escape and as a viable alternative to 4x4 SUV’s or traditional family wagons,” he said.
“Following the world premiere at the Sydney Motor Show in October, we’ve already shown that the All-New BT-50 will be more comfortable than ever before and will forge new paths in utility styling. So why shouldn’t there be the expectation that the All-New BT-50 will also offer better safety than ever before?”
The All-New Mazda BT-50 will make its New Zealand debut in late 2011.

Subaru STi launches in the virtual world
STI launches in the virtual world
Subaru’s new WRX STI sedan features in the iconic Gran Turismo 5 PlayStationÒ 3 game launched this week.
An STI sedan has not been available since 2007, but is making its comeback in the latest Version 5 of the game.
The original Playstation was credited with popularising the WRX STI in North America, before it was launched into that market several years after it first appeared in New Zealand.
The WRX STI has also been a massive sales success since its launch, when four-door sedan variants were reintroduced. In Japan, 2400 sedans and hatches have been sold since debut in July, double those initially forecast.
Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subaru vehicles, says featuring the WRX STI in Gran Turismo 5 is an effective and entertaining way to raise awareness of the model and introduce more people to the adrenaline-pumping WRX STI experience.
Since the first series was introduced in 1997, Gran Turismo has been highly popular not only among video game fans worldwide, but also professional racing and rally drivers.
Gran Turismo has been developed by Polyphony Digital Inc and published by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
PlayStation, PS3 and Gran Turismo are registered trademarks of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.

The SKY’s the limit for Mazda
Mazda has showcased its next-generation powertrains that use Mazda’s SKYACTIV Technologies to significantly improve fuel efficiency across its vehicle line up. The SKYACTIV next-generation technology forms the basis of Mazda’s goal of a 30 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency across its vehicles by 2015. With SKYACTIV technology, Mazda’s next-generation petrol engine models will achieve a fuel economy equivalent to that of current models that are one class smaller. Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director for Mazda New Zealand, says the new SKYACTIV engines are an integral part of the company’s Sustainable Zoom-Zoom vision. “To ensure we continue to provide our customers with the Zoom-Zoom experience along with excellent environmental performance, Mazda engineers focused on base technologies. This is then combined with electronic devices such as the i-Stop idling system to provide a dramatic improvement in fuel efficiency and a significant reduction in emissions. SKYACTIV is a major step forward and I think New Zealand motorists will notice a significant difference to their fuel bill when SKYACTIV-equipped models start to arrive here next year,” says Clearwater. Mazda debuted three of its SKYACTIV products at the Australian International Auto Show in Sydney: The Mazda SKYACTIV-G direct injection petrol engine, the Mazda SKYACTIV-D clean diesel engine and the Mazda SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission. Mazda’s next generation direct-injection petrol engine SKYACTIV-G is a highly efficient direct-injection gasoline engine that achieves the world’s highest gasoline engine compression ratio of 14.0:1[1]. with no abnormal combustion (knocking). A 4-2-1 exhaust system, cavity pistons, multihole injectors and other innovations enable the high compression ratio which significantly improves engine efficiency, resulting in 15 per cent increases in fuel efficiency and torque. This equates to improved everyday driving for customers thanks to increased torque at low-to mid-engine speeds. The engine also uses Mazda’s single nano-technology catalyst which reduces the use of precious metals by 70 per cent. The next-generation clean diesel engine for Mazda, SKYACTIV-D will meet global emissions regulations without expensive NOx aftertreatments such as urea selective catalytic reduction (SCR) or a Lean NOx Trap (LNT). It has the world’s lowest diesel compression ratio of 14.0:1 and features 20 per cent improved fuel economy. A new two-stage turbocharger means the engine delivers a smooth and linear response from low to high engine speeds with greatly increased low and high end torque while achieving European Stage 6 compliance. Wraps come off Mazda’s all-new BT-50
Mazda unveiled the all-new BT-50 to the world this morning at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney. The Mazda BT-50 has been designed for those who lead busy and diverse lifestyles, signalling a new direction in the utility market. The BT-50 combines refined and expressive styling with outstanding environmental and safety performance along with dynamic driving performance. Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director for Mazda New Zealand, says the BT-50 will extend the appeal of the utility vehicle from traditional business users to a wider range of customers, particularly those with active lifestyles. “We expect the BT-50 to set a new standard in its segment when it launches here in late 2011. The vehicle will appeal to a wide range of New Zealand drivers as it blurs the lines between lifestyle and utility vehicle,” says Clearwater. It’s the unique, expressive design of the BT-50 which gives it universal appeal. Mazda’s design team looked to push the boundaries of utility design with the BT-50 to deliver a vehicle which not only looks desirable but also is strong and dependable. The result is a design concept known as ‘Sophisticated Athlete’, with the BT-50 showcasing an athletic stance that, even when stationery, hints at its outstanding performance capabilities. The exterior of the BT-50 features an athletic design with muscular flowing lines from the fenders along the sides of the vehicle and dynamic wedge-shaped proportions unlike any other utility. Mazda’s new family face, the bold five-point grille, is further evolved on the BT-50 for a more imposing expression. The vehicle’s headlights feature the unique boomerang shape as seen on Mazda’s other models while the taillights are stretched horizontally, reaching around the corners and across the tailgate for a sporty rear view – a design first in the segment. The interior features a more sporty and personal feel to complement the dynamic exterior image. The dashboard has an asymmetric design to create optimal space on each side of it as well as wrap around the driver to provide an open space for the passenger while supporting enthusiastic driving. The flowing interior design also connects the centre of the instrument panel to the raised centre console, a never before seen design in a pickup truck. Four bold metallic panel strips on the door trim and sides of the centre console further express dynamism while a metallic outline highlights the two cylindrical meters and connects them via a centre strip to improve readability and enhance the sporty look of the instrument panel. The audio control panel and the climate control panels, which have independent driver and passenger-side temperature controls, complete the beautifully designed human interface. “The BT-50’s size combined with the comfortable interior of a passenger vehicle makes it the ideal vehicle for people heading to the beach one weekend and down to the snow the next. The BT-50 is perfectly suited to deal with New Zealand’s diverse and contrasting landscape,” says Clearwater. The current Mazda BT-50 was established as a one-tonne utility. It has won numerous awards and gained a strong following all over the world. With modern and refined styling both inside and out, the all-New Mazda BT-50 will raise the bar in the utility segment and for the first time provide a realistic alternative to the family wagon and 4x4 SUV.
